Influential French publication Purple Fashion has just finished the highly awaited (and much needed) re-design of its website. No longer relying on a simplistic blog format, the new site offers links to several different pages including editor Oliver Zahm’s popular Purple Diary. There are also plans for expansion to the site including upcoming collaborations and a new Purple TELEVISION series set to launch in September with channels ranging from sex to shopping. As a special summer gift, Purple is currently allowing users to read Issue 15 of the magazine for free online.
Although he’s been lauded for his womenswear, Marc Jacobs’ eponymous menswear line can be very hit-or-miss. Often shifting extremely from one aesthetic to another depending on the season, the label can run the gamut anywhere from minimalist neo-traditional to wild, print-splattered avant garde. Luckily for fashion fans, however, his 2012 Spring/Summer campaign seems to preview a very strong mix of the two. With more conservative items like knit cardigans with contrast piping and shrunken, gold-buttoned blazers mixing seamlessly with shiny waxed pants, nontraditional drawstring-detailed trousers and (literally) gold-plated oxfords – the lookbook offered here is one of Jacobs’ strongest in recent memory.
New from American-born artist Futura’s Japanese fashion label comes a solid look at their upcoming Fall/Winter collection for 2011. Founded in 2000, the brand has made quality fabrics and versatile, street-influenced design part of its mission statement. The latest collection doesn’t disappoint, with military-style pea coats, patchwork scarves, gingham button-downs, utility jackets, tote bags and roomily-cut chinos all making triumphant debuts. Available soon at select Futura Laboratories retailers.
New from Staple Design comes a physical manifestation of their popular and pugnacious fowl character. BELLATOR COLUMBIDAE literally means “fighting pigeon” in Latin, and an angry big guy he is indeed. Created in collaboration with toy-makers extraordinaire Adfunture Workshop, this figurine is so large (nearly a foot tall) that he has to be stabilized by his extensive tail feathers. Accessorized with his own fitted cap, BELLATOR COLUMBIDAE is limited to 100 pieces and will be sold at Reed Space starting August 15th for $180 USD.
Over the years, both Dickies and CLOT have proven themselves to be respectable and desirable institutions among fashion lovers, regarded for both their style and their quality. Despite the age difference, however, these two labels have teamed up to release an unprecedented capsule collection of collaborative t-shirts. Blending their individuality and brand spirits, the first style (known as the “Torn Tee”) merges the logos of both brands into one while the other style (known as the “Shuimo Tee”) transforms traditional Chinese Shuimo painting into Dickies’ logo making for the perfect mixture of American and Chinese qualities. Both t-shirt styles are currently available for purchase through select stockists, including JUICE.

Tokyo Fixed, a bike shop based in London but incepted in Japan (hence the name), has become well-known as a craft builder of masterful custom fixed-gear bicycles. Following up on their expertise, the company has recently revealed two new models of bikes under their own brand name. The first of the two is dubbed the S1 and was not only inspired by Japanese Keirin frames, but also named after one of the top racing classes on the Keirin circuit. High-performance and technologically advanced, the S1 is built from ultra-light tubing coupled with Kaisei aero-style bladed forks for the ultimate in super speedy riding. Tokyo Fixed Bikes’ second frame is (expectedly enough) called the S2 and designed for more casual riders, built with an emphasis on comfort and long-term durability. Those interested in either of these beautiful, custom-inspired fixies can get them now through Tokyo Fixed Bikes.

With all of the press that Levis’ latest project, their new bike-oriented “Commuter” line, has garnered recently, they’ve got a lot to live up to in terms of promotion. Never ones to disappoint, however, the denim brand threw what appears to be one of their best parties yet in collaboration with Fast Folks, a popular bike retailer in Austin, Texas. From food to beer, girls to bikes and, of course, all of the brand new clothes, this event seems to have had it all. Looks like quite the party!
Japanese brand Hectic has recently opened a new storefront in Osaka and, in order to celebrate its christening, decided to tag their logo on a wall in the location. Never shy of social media, the brand then videotaped the process, sped it up and cut it into a short but highly entertaining video sure to entice all those interested in graffiti and street art. Known for their vintage-style tees, caps, button-down shirts and accessories, Hectic’s latest outpost in Osaka certainly has one dope wall!
English heritage brand Barbour is best known for their famous waxed cotton jackets that have nearly become a generic trademark for all coats of the style. There’s no doubt that Barbour’s outerwear is formidable, however, there is also a lot more to the brand’s line of offerings than cold-weather staples. Case and point: this Japan-only release tote bag. Crafted from 100% natural cotton, lined in nylon and featuring premium leather details – the tote comes in beige, khaki and navy and uses the classic gold Barbour pull-zipper for closure. Buy it now for ¥19,000 JPY (approximately $240 USD) over at zozo.
Japanese fashion brand WAREHOUSE takes heritage seriously. For their new sublabel, everything from the design of the denim to the actual name of the brand was inspired by painstaking research into classic Americana. Entitled Heller’s Café, a moniker inspired by an actual establishment that existed in the U.S. during the 1870s, the brand’s emphasis is on exquisitely appointed, handmade Japanese denim. Their HC-035 model is a complete replica of the way jeans looked in the workwear period of 1870-1910 – down to a relaxed straight leg fit, 13oz denim and cloth logo tag on the upper back waist. An interesting fact is that Levis apparently invented the leather tag for denim, so before their inception all branded pants featured cloth tags. Those who like their jeans injected with a little bit of historical gravitas can purchase the Heller’s Café HC-035s for $2900 HKD (approximately $372 USD) now over at TAKE 5.

The new agnès b. store on SoHo’s Howard St. in Manhattan was host to a slew of young photo-fanatics and fashionistas alike as it recently hosted the “Certain Young French Photography and Drawings” exhibition. As Agnes herself is a graduate of the Paris Beaux-Arts School in Versailles, she has partnered with them as well as the Lucien and Rodolphe Hervé Association to showcase the work of 7 up-and-coming French photographers (Luna Picoli-Truffaut, Marc Cellier, Claudia Imbert, Nicolas Dhervillers, Claire Adelfang, Matthias Olmeta, and Leonard Bourgois-Beaulieu) as well as several other artists at her state-side flagship. The artists are tied together by a shared interest in developing “invented realities that manifest their idiosyncrasies.” By presenting both photography and drawings side-by-side, the agnès b. brand hopes to encourage a coalescence of the two. Open now through August 31, 2011.

After a hiatus of over two decades, legendary German auto manufacturer BMW will return to the DTM racing scene…and in style nonetheless. For an historically German race comes an ominously styled concept M3, proclaimed to be very similar to, but not an exact version of, the actual car to be used in the competition next season. Styled in tonal matte black paint, this fierce-looking Beamer is powered by a 480-horsepower, 4.0-liter V8 engine and features a six-speed sequential gearbox. Capable of pouncing to 62 miles per hour in 3 seconds, the stealthy M3 can continue on to reach a max speed of 186 mph. Although concept cars and race cars alike tend to be outlandish or exceptionally flashy in design, the BMW M3 DTM Concept is an excellent example of how restrained, elegant styling can still end up producing a mean-looking, race-ready end result.

Footwear brand Gourmet broke onto the scene a few years ago with their inspired take on classic, simple sneaker silhouettes re-imagined in fresh new combinations such as primary-colored canvases and sumptuous premium leathers. New from the company, which appears to be pushing their offerings further and further as of late, comes this sneak preview of their Tredici model set for a spring 2012 release. A combination of a basic low-top lace-up and a hiking boot, the shoe features welded metal D-ring eyelets, contrast piping along the midsole and a classic white Vibram sole. Although the hiking boot/sneaker hybrid is nothing new in terms of design, Gourmet’s take on the kicks is a definitively clean and modern interpretation.
Inventory Magazine gives us an exciting sneak peek into some of the behind the scenes action that occurred in Florence before and during Band of Outsiders’ well-received West Side Story-influenced presentation. Now in their fifth season, Pointer has sprouted up unexpectedly as one of the most well-designed and formidable niche-market footwear brands around. Gareth Skewis and Rose Choules started the label in 2004 much for the same reason as many other shoe companies begin: they couldn’t find any kicks they liked. Originally motivated by the lack of clean-cut silhouettes available, Pointer has since expanded into a full lifestyle brand responsible for consistently cranking out new shoe designs, accessories and more – such as opening their first-ever retail location in Berlin. Those in the neighborhood should definitely go check the Pointer store out. Since so much detail and hard work goes into making their shoes, it’s doubtful that the store will disappoint.

New from all-star former Clipse rapper Pusha-T and supremely popular OFWGKTA artist Tyler, the Creator comes this behind the scenes peek at their upcoming video for “Trouble on My Mind.” The video seems to promise all kinds of debauchery, with each of the two rappers dressing in matching outfits to represent the other’s persona (Pusha-T admits the Tyler doppleganger portion of this video shoot was his first time ever wearing Vans), extras from old ladies to street thugs and skaters running about and 20-year old Tyler, who is seen using crutches due to an injury, consistently hurling himself around in slapstick fashion. It looks like everyone involved had a fun time making this video happen and the end result is sure to be nothing short of entertaining. “Trouble on My Mind” is the newest single off of Pusha’s G.O.O.D Music solo mixtape endeavor, Fear of God.

Many urban metropolises are rife with street art and posters, but largely of a two-dimensional format. Dry the River together with FOAM’s Xavier Barrade challenged the concept of street art with a series of three-dimensional posters based off of the heads of horses. Randomly placed throughout London, the paper aspect was created by Barrade in Google Sketch Up with each horse taking 35 hours to build. The video is also in part a launching pad for Dry the River’s No Rest single which can be downloaded here.
